Pottery with Hartke - HANDBUILD & WHEEL (All Levels)
Take pottery classes with Howard Hartke in the Visual Arts Center Pottery Studio. This class caters to the individual with a desire to learn the art and technique of hand built or wheel thrown pottery. The class is designed for the beginner as well as those that have been challenged by the potter’s wheel. This class will focus on mastering the basics of centering, pulling and shaping. No previous pottery experience is needed. Learn to create bowls, vases, and other functional stoneware pottery pieces. There is a $60 Material Fee for this class which includes 25 lbs. of clay, use of glazes, kiln time and sales tax.
Classes include glazing (using VAC standard glazes) and firing for 1 item per session. Additional items can be glazed for $5 per item and fired for $5 per item. Clay, tools, and projects cannot be stored in the Pottery Studio. A rental locker with digital lock is available for $5 a week or $15 a month to store clay, tools, and in-progress pottery work for those not wanting to transport items. Only clay purchased at the VAC may be fired in the VAC Kilns. Clay may be purchased for $25 per 25 lbs.
Pottery Too Kit: $15
You will need sponges and pottery tools which can be purchased at the VAC Art & Supply Store for $15.00. Purchase a Pottery Tool Kit online (click here), by phone or in person at the VAC Front Desk. Your kit will be waiting for you on your first day of class.

All class dates and times are subject to change. Classes with a start date within 30 days require payment in full to reserve a place. Prepaid class fees (paid more than 30 days in advance) are refundable less a non-refundable reservation deposit of $30 (VAC Members $25) up until 30 days prior to a class start date at which time all class fees become non-refundable unless the class is cancelled by the VAC.
Please register early. Classes with less than five registered students may be cancelled up to 24 hours in advance of the start date. Cancellation notifications are made by email and/or telephone (including voice messages) to the email address and telephone number on file. Please check your voice mail and email prior to leaving for class.
