Pottery with Hartke - RAKU & HORSE HAIR (All Levels)

  • $220.00

Take pottery classes with Howard Hartke in the Visual Arts Center (VAC) Pottery Studio.

Raku first appeared in Japan in the 16th Century, and can be translated to “The best in the world”. Raku is created by hand and fired to 1850 degrees, then removed while red hot and placed in a container filled with paper and wood chips. When it ignites the paper, a cover is placed over it allowing the flames to consume the oxygen and paint the pottery with color and design. No two pieces are alike!

Horse Hair Raku is a method of decorating pottery by applying horse hair to the heated pottery, creating smoke patterns and unique designs on the pottery's surface.

Includes 25 lbs. of clay with additional clay available at $25 for 25 lbs. Students need to purchase basic pottery tools prior to the first class, which can be purchased and ready for you to pick up before the start of class for $15.00.
