Draw & Paint with Lucas - HOW TO DRAW WHAT YOU SEE
Join Catherine Lucas at the Visual Arts Center (VAC) and learn to draw what you see! This class explores the perceptual process of vision in drawing realistic subjects. When it comes to drawing what we see, it’s more important to learn “what to draw” than “how to draw. In other words, to observe and draw what we actually see, not what we think we see.
In this class students will learn to accurately draw subjects from life, not only by observing what they actually see, but also through understanding the nature of light and inherent quality of forms. This is the same optical tradition in which masters
like Velazquez, Rembrandt, and Vermeer employed in their investigation
into the essential qualities of light and the construct of form. Here, students
will render subjects in the same optical tradition, learning to construct and
model form by gaining an understanding of the character of light and by
learning about what they are drawing.
The Envelope and Block-in approach to the drawing process will be
introduced in this course along with an emphasis on Gesture, Contour,
Light and Shadow and understanding form with “drawing on the inside”.
Students will work primarily from still life.
Students will expect to accomplish:
1. An approach to inaugurate the drawing process
2. An understanding of the nature of light in modeling or constructing 3-
dimensional form on 2-dimensional surface.
3. A working knowledge of various dry drawing media and their surface
preparations.
4. An understanding of design and composition.
