Fiber Art with Montale - INDIGO DYEING SHIBORI AND SASHIKO

  • $120.00

Study indigo dyeing, shibori, and sashiko  techniques with Cheryl Montale at the Visual Arts Center (VAC). Explore a variety of traditional techniques to create pattern and design on cotton, linen, silk, and wool. Indigo is a plant-based dye that produces endless shades of beautiful blues and has been used worldwide for centuries. Shibori is a generalized term for creating a resist pattern on fabric using stitching, tying, folding, and clamping. Sashiko is the Japanese tradition of stitching cloth to mend and strengthen it, creating beautiful patterns in the process. We will combine these methods to create contemporary textiles which can be used for anything from garments and home decor to wall art.

Materials fee: $20.00 - Includes indigo dye, a silk scarf, and a canvas tote. Students are welcome to bring any natural fiber clothing, new or upcycled, or yardage of 1 yard or less. Additional items to dye will be available for purchase, and will be discussed in the first class. Students should bring to class high cuffed rubber gloves, at least one old towel, a plastic trash bag for transporting wet items home, and should wear old clothing or bring an apron.
