Friday, May 2, 2025 from 9am to 4pm - Lunch Break from 12pm to 1pm.  

Join Liz Cole for a half-day Collage Workshop at the Visual Arts Center (VAC). Workshop.  Immerse yourself in a full-day workshop that will spark your creative papers then turn them into colorful mixed media collaged paintings.  This workshop will introduce you to a variety of collage ideas that you can apply to painted canvas or paper.

Supplies: 

Deli paper will be supplied by instructor

Required:

  • Spray bottle
  • Water Container for brushes
  • Styrofoam or paper plates
  • Foam & bristle brushes of various sizes - cheap ones at paint store or Dollar store
  • Paper towels
  • Masking tape - I like Frog Tape
  • Scissors
  • Latex gloves
  • Matte medium - I like Golden
  • Silicon scraper. Recommended Zoie + Chloe Multipurpose Silicon Bowl Scraper ($7.99 on Amazon)
  • Acrylic paints 
  •  Suggested Materials:
  • Brushes, stencils, stamps foam/rubber, acrylic inks, colored pencils, oil pastels. (Bring whatever you have for mark making and add some more. There are lots of found objects that can make marks!)
  • Watercolor Paper - I like 300 lb cold press Kilimanjaro natural white, 22x30 inches per sheet. cheapjoes.com. One sheet can yield three 10x10" pieces & the leftovers can make wonderful cards! Other watercolor paper will also be good, just make sure it is heavier rather than lighter. 
  • Canvas - I like Dick Blick Gallery Profile back stapled (blue label). Consider 10x10" or 12x12".
  • Paper & canvas should be gessoed. 

Artist Biography:

Liz Cole, known for her intense colors and handmade collage, brings joy and energy to the whimsical narratives she paints.  Liz has spent her entire life in the arts from her elementary days at the Toledo Museum of Art to her professional career as an art educator and administrator in higher education.  Her degrees include a BFA in Painting from Ohio University, M Ed in Art Education, and PhD in Higher Education from the University of Toledo, and a Management Development Certificate from Harvard.  She spent 22 years at the University of Toledo serving as director of the Art Education program, Chair of the Department of Art, and Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences.  A nationally recognized expert on young children's art, she co-founded the early childhood program for the Museum in 1978.  Her contributions to the field of art are extensive, including co-authoring the book "Art to Art".
