Study acrylic painting with Mairin Wilson at the Visual Arts Center (VAC). Acrylics are one of the most versatile painting mediums. It’s easy to work with and to achieve a variety of effects. If you're ready to get started with this medium, then "Exploring Acrylics" is a great place to start. Mairin will provide a reference photo and a step-by-step guide for completing the painting. You'll learn the basic materials, tools, and surfaces for painting with acrylics; how to mix and apply values to create the illusion of light and form; to transfer images to a canvas and painting directly; color theory; how to create harmonious works; acrylic fluid and gel mediums; underpainting to establish the tonal range; how to create and apply translucent glazes of color.

Supplies: 
  • Heavy Body or Fluid Acrylic Paints (8): Quinacridone Magenta, Naphthol or Pyrrole Red (Light or Medium), Hansa or Cadmium Yellow Light & Medium, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Blue (Green shade), Carbon Black, Titanium White  
  • Painting Substrates
    • Wood panels, stretched canvas, canvas panels, or paper
    • Inexpensive surfaces for experiments: gesso both sides of heavy weight cardboard
  • Mediums:  A slow  drying medium (Acrylic Glazing Medium or OPEN Medium) Gels:  Soft or Regular Gel Gloss Gesso (a white primer) 
  • Tools:
    • Paper Towels
    • Water Container
    • Spray Bottle
    • Brushes
    • Bar of Soap (Ivory) 
    • Painting Knife with Stepped Handle 
    • Pencil 
    • Ruler 
  • Painting Palettes: Disposable paper palettes for acrylics, disposable coated plastic plates, freeze paper or other release surface such as glass, or Plexi called High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

Class Refund: Class tuition is fully refundable, less a non-refundable reservation deposit of $25 ($20 VAC Member) up until 30 days prior to class. An Education Credit (less non-refundable deposit) may be issued towards a future class between 29 days and 10 days prior to class start.
