Experience a hands-on introduction to scrimshaw—the 18th-century maritime art of American whalers—still handcrafted today in Newport, RI. In this workshop, Brian shares the history of whaling and its connection to scrimshaw, explains the materials and current laws, and guides you step-by-step in creating your own scrimshaw bookmark from an antique piano key.
Artist's Biography:
Karen Sako fuses classical design with bold experimentation to explore light’s fleeting nature and the layered complexity of the natural world. A passionate educator, she shares her techniques and insights with contagious enthusiasm, inspiring creative risk-taking and discovery.
Holding a BFA in Visual Communications from the Illinois Institute of Art, Karen is an accomplished abstract artist, designer, and instructor known for workshops that blend intuition and technique to help students uncover their unique artistic voice.
